Poniente or Levante?

Tarifa sits at the narrowest point between Europe and Africa. Two completely different winds blow here, and each one means different spots, different kites and different conditions. Tap a wind.

West wind from the AtlanticEast wind from the Mediterranean

A humid, cooler sea breeze from the Atlantic. Steady and predictable, often picking up in the afternoon after calm mornings. At the main beaches it blows cross-onshore.

A warm, dry wind from the Mediterranean that accelerates through the Strait like a nozzle. It can blow for hours, days or even weeks, day and night. At the main beaches it blows cross-offshore.

  • The classic learning wind: steady, few gusts, ideal for your first hours.
  • Up to 10 °C cooler than Levante. Pack a jumper in spring and autumn.
  • On sunny summer days a thermal boost adds wind, especially at Valdevaqueros.
  • The big day for advanced riders: lots of power, speed and height for jumps.
  • Even in Levante we make safe learning possible for every level.
  • When it gets too strong and gusty, we drive to calmer spots like Palmones or Getares.

Learn to kitesurf in Tarifa

Tarifa is often called Europe's wind capital: there is wind on around 300 days a year, and between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean you will find a suitable beach for almost every wind direction.

That makes it ideal for beginners. The Atlantic Poniente usually blows steadily, and the wide sandy beach of Los Lances leaves plenty of room for your first kite control. And even in Levante we make safe learning possible for every level, at a spot that suits the wind.

We teach all year round: in summer often in a warm Levante, in winter in mild temperatures around 15 °C with far emptier beaches.

Whether you are looking for a kite school, a kitesurf school or a kiteschool in Tarifa: Tarifa Surf Club is all of them, with lessons, kite camps, accommodation and equipment rental in one place.

Lessons are in English, German or Spanish, so every step is explained in your language. For an extra €50 you can earn the VDWS licence, the internationally recognised kite certificate, including the Stepflat for all further levels.

Read more about the process, duration and cost in our guide Learn kitesurfing. Spots, season and water temperature are covered in Kitesurfing in Tarifa.

No. Our lessons start from zero with theory, safety and kite control on land. Advanced riders join at their level.

How much does a kitesurf lesson cost at Tarifa Surf Club?

Semi-private (2 students per instructor, 3 hours) costs €110 per person per day with a shared kite (€100 from day 4) or €130 with your own kite (€120 from day 4). Private lessons (1:1, 2 hours) cost €150, €140 from day 4. Gear, radio and rescue are included; the VDWS licence is €50 extra.

Yes. Lessons, Help 2 Kite and equipment rental are available all year. Kite camps with accommodation run from mid-September to mid-June.

Most beginners need around 3 to 5 days of lessons to ride their first metres on the board. It depends on wind, experience and lesson type.

Can I book lessons and accommodation together?

Yes. Our kite camps combine 6 nights in the guest house or an apartment with lessons or Help 2 Kite, from €599 per person.
